Drop the A-Bomb

NY Daily News cartoonist Bill gallo has always drawn Steinbrenner with a German WWI helmet so I decided to pay a little homage to him here.  The inspiration came from the movie “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.”  A-Rod’s pose was meant to recall the climax of the movie, though I’m not happy with the way the lips turned out.  I especially love Cashman’s pose cowering before The Boss though.  Notice also on the map behind them that the locations of A-Rod’s previous teams - Seattle and the Rangers - are X’d out.

Dropping the A-Rod A-Bomb
By Geoff Walter / SNY.tv

I have absolutely no idea why the Yankees would want to trade Alex Rodriguez. With a league-leading 30 home runs and 86 RBIs through half a season, he is the entire reason the Yankees are where they are today -- in the middle of the AL East, and not in the cellar.

Love him or hate him, A-Rod represents the best chance the Yankees have this year of making the playoffs: he is their power, and (who would have thought?) one of their clutch players, if not THE clutch player. Just check out his numbers in the ninth inning, they speak for themselves.
The biggest debate centers over A-Rod's opt-out clause which kicks in after this season. If the Yankees want to keep him, they're going to have to fork over major bucks to keep him, and if they don't, they'll be hard pressed to find the combination of a third baseman who can hit for power anywhere else on the market or in their farm system.
A-Rod is just now getting used to New York. Is he really willing to give up four years in order to start all over again somewhere else? If A-Rod does opt out, he's setting himself up for his legacy to be just another journeyman who can hit home runs, who won't be identified with any single team but rather was just a gun-for-hire, and a guy who may break the all-time home run record one day.
