Well, I had an incredible day at the Yankee parade, but the same probably couldn’t be said for Mr. Met here.
Since it was nine years since the last Yankee parade, I decided to be a little stupid and ride the train in to Manhattan, taking the subway down to Chambers St. The crowd was immense and I ended up being stopped by a barricade (pushed up against it by the throngs, actually as well as people trying to get up out of the subway on Church St.. However, an older African-American man was trying to get through to get to his flower shop he said, and I being the opportunist helped him over the barricade, and was able to get by myself!
Again I pushed on past crowds down Chambers St. and found myself right across from City Hall at 270 Broadway! Many of the fans were busy climbing the scaffolding like ironworkers getting a better view, only to be shooed away by the NYPD. I waited for about an hour next to a mailbox before the parade came by - some idiot held up a sign in front of me as I was taking a picture of Jeter, but I did manage to get a fairly good shot - and chants of “Who are you?! Who are you?!” greeted the people on the busses (probably Stadium workers and/or family and friends of the players).
A woman had occupied the two mailboxes sitting on top of them, but after she had left, I pounced on them, getting, myself a much better view as well as a respite from standing since I departed that morning on the LIRR. Afterwards, I walked a little down towards the corner of Broadway and Murray St. where they set up a large jumbo-tron (one square was not working) and watched most of the ceremony from afar. Walking back, the confetti and ticker-tape was in piles along Broadway, probably about waist high.
I think I’ve learned to draw the ticker-tape quite well here - I can liken it to either an open-ended figure-eight, or the double-helix of DNA. As for Jeter on the float, it’s probably my best rendering yet of the Yankee captain; I think the high cheek-bone really cinches it as well as the calm and cool look as opposed to A-Rod’s fist-pumping.
