"Geoff the Ref"
So many questions
By Geoff Walter / SNY.tv
The fall and winter months always bring some interesting and provocative questions to the New York sports world. In yet another year bereft of a trophy, there is no shortage of queries and speculation because lots of things can happen. Occasionally some of those questions make it into this column, while others don't, so here is a smattering of the latter (though I still reserve the right to bring any of the following back for a stand-alone column).
As "open letters" to Omar Minaya dot the SNY message boards, telling the Mets GM what he should and should not do with the team, the pitching still is the biggest question mark. With Tom Glavine set to decline his option and become a free agent, he's probably going back to the Braves. Willie Randolph doesn't envy Yankees counterpart Joe Torre's job security, but as time continues to drag on with no official word that Torre will be taking up residency on the unemployment line, the odds are he'll be helming yet another year in the Bronx. That in turn will answer another question: whether George Steinbrenner is still The Boss or not (even though he's turned more control over to his sons).
Also of immediate concern is whether or not the Jets can ever win another game (probably, but don't bet on it happening soon since they more than channeled their progenitors the Titans yesterday, appearing to be a reincarnation of the terrible team), and QB Chad Pennington can ever pass for, well, anything. Will the Islanders remain in first place? Nope. Will Kobe Bryant be a Knick? Don't make me laugh. Do you know how much Isiah Thomas would have to trade away? These are the questions that don't keep me up at night. You can speculate and argue all you want but there's a difference between what can happen and what will happen. That remains the biggest question of all. Nobody really has all the answers; that's half the fun.
