I don’t think that people are necessarily going to The Garden to see the Knicks play anymore, but to see the other teams win. It was certainly the case as Kobe Bryant scored 61 points Monday and then future New Jersey Net LeBron James had 52 and a triple double Wednesday! So naturally I had to draw them walking all over the Knicks.
I wanted to go for a Harlem Globetrotter feel, like the two of them were just toying around with the New York defense - which of course they were - and evoke some acrobatics like you see in the Globetrotter games, hence LeBron waiting for Kobe to pass him the ball and get another ally-oop. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Hook,” you know that the Lost Boys do something similar, tossing the basketball around between them above the backboard.
It’s rare where I use the vertical orientation, but you really can’t do this cartoon in landscape because everyone would either be squished or drawn very small in order to fit everything in.
I do especially like the third Knick’s reaction as Kobe’s foot hits him. Having the mouthpiece shoot out was a last minute thought I added.
