For some bizarre reason this squirrel started showing up at Yankee Stadium and climbing up and down the right field fowl pole.  The first night he was just laying on top of the pole, as if taking some naps.  OK, it’s just a strange little thing.  Then he showed up again and again, and the Yankees kept winning!  When people start showing up at the Stadium with plush squirrels on their shoulders and hats and hand made signs praising him as well, you’ve got a phenomenon on your hands.  During 2002 against the Angels I HATED that stupid rally monkey, and at the time I thought we were close to getting our own version of that annoying primate.  During one of the games they showed a fan with “Sweeper the Squirrel” on his hand made sign, so that’s what I named him as well.  That name didn’t stick, as quite a number believed it to be Rizzuto reincarnated and he became “Scooter.”  I expect to see a full mascot somewhere in the Yankee minor-league system in the 2008 season.
