Damon’s Left Out in the Cold

Johnny Damon’s basically being told by the Yankees to pack up, get out and that he’s simply not wanted in the Bronx anymore.  It’s a shame for one of the guys who kept the clubhouse so loose last season, and who really wanted to come back in 2010.  I guess when you’ve signed Curtis Granderson, it doesn’t really matter what intangibles a guy might lend to your team.

I remember the ferver New York went after Damon when he became a free agent after the 2005 season, ending up donning the pinstripes in 2006.  The real reason the Bombers signed him to that four-year, $52 million deal was just so they could keep him out of Boston’s hands.  I can still see the newspaper headline (the Daily News, I think) announcing his arrival: “King Idiot.”  Now (as I pointed out to a Red Sox fan I know), he’s the only living guy with rings from both sides of the rivalry.

Really intense amount of painting here, lots of layers, from the light on the snow to the gully created by Damon’s duffel bag to the snow on the trees and lamp post itself, this clocked in at a great many hours to put through post-production, but I am glad how it turned out.  The hardest part was thinking in layers and how to create that trail through the snow to make it look as though Damon’s bag had been tossed out.
