Ah, Opening Day for the Mets against - who else? - those pesky Marlins. Of course, with Johan Santana your No. 1 starter, you’re going fishing to a 7-1 victory.
I had originally drawn Santana’s nose and jaw-line like the one I did for his first coming to the Mets rather than for when he was facing elbow problems by mistake (old habits are hard to break). However, they were corrected in post-production to the latter version.
I first tried to paint a background here similar to the one I did for the 0-12 Miami Dolphins cartoon, but the green grass land didn’t look very good with the paintbrush so I opted for a background more like the beach. If you look closely, you can still see some of the green on the fringes of the shore, something I actually think adds to the cartoon rather than subtracts.
I had originally envisioned with the title of “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay,” a reference to Flushing Bay. With that title, I thought about possibly having Jason Bay involved somehow, but it made more sense with Santana.
