It’s the end of an era in Seattle - and baseball - as Ken Griffey Jr. retired today from the Mariners. I can remember watching the Yankees-Mariners playoff series in 1995 and Griffey looking so young (he was nicknamed “the Kid” after all) and now he’s retiring. It just means I’m getting older, I guess. Griffey really is the first of this generation of baseball players - of the ones that I grew up watching - that are now retiring. He’s a sure-fire first ballot Hall of Famer, but still it’s a little surreal to see someone that you’ve watched for practically their entire career calling it quits. And yes, it will be a little sadder knowing that Griffey’s not going to be in the game anymore.
I thought up this cartoon after I read a quote from Milton Bradley upon hearing that Griffey retired: “On a day like this, it should rain in Seattle.”
