The Real Gold at the End of the Rainbow

Happy St. Patrick’s Day all!  These holidays somehow keep falling just when I happen to have a cartoon don’t they? (laugh).  You’ve all heard that there’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, right?  Well here’s the baseball equivalent of that.

I know I say this a lot, but I really like this one as it turned out just like I had envisioned it, plus I finally learned a better way to work the gradient tool!  Admittedly I probably went a little nuts with my new toy, as the trophy and the meadow under the tree are all gradients, but I think it looks really good.

I thought about having a leprechaun protecting the “gold” at the end of the rainbow with an expression on his face that he was being watched, and possibly wearing a Red Sox “B” on his derby, but I felt it would be too much.  Instead I just settled on a Yankee and Met stumbling onto the 2008 trophy and each other.  I also wanted beams of light shining down through the trees, but thought it would clash with the rainbow.

Some of the lines in the rainbow were also removed from the line art so the Yankee fan would shop up clearer.

My fear of the editors (and by extension readers) not knowing what was going on without the text bubbles came to pass as one of the editors asked me if I was making a prediction that the Yankees and Mets would play in the World Series with the Mets winning (because the Yankee fan was obscured by the rainbow), or if this was somehow a comment on free agency.  I still have no idea how he got the idea for the latter.
