Hot on the heels of the Twins catching the Tigers on the last day of the regular season is Minnesota taking the AL Central crown from the Tigers in stunning fashion.
I had literally gone to a meeting with the game in the late innings figuring that I would return home knowing who the Yankees would face in the ALDS only to find the game was still going on!
The cartoon you see above is probably the most intensive one I’ve done since the Mr. Met Opening Day comic. It combines two cartoons - yes, you read that correctly - as I drew Mauer, Morneau and the caged Tiger on one sheet, and the background on another.
I wanted the feel of an expedition in the jungle, kind of like a “Dr. Livingston, I presume?” atmosphere, and just after the big hunt where the hunters take pictures with their captured (and killed) prey. I had originally wanted the feel of a painting - meaning no line art - in the background, so I painted in the computer using the lines I had drawn on paper as a guide. However, the effect was less than what I hoped, and so blurry I was getting eye strain just looking at it, so I returned to the traditional approach.
The rope suspending the cage was the other tricky part here, as I had only drawn a piece of it for the first cartoon, and a longer length on the background art, figuring that I could scale the rope down in the computer. However, the background rope proved to be too thick and created a problem with the “loop” on the top of the tree branch.
Eventually I simply gave in, erasing the background rope entirely and simply extended the rope from the cage using the pencil tool and added the underside of the loop around the branch.
